Sabarimala Pilgrimage Health Advisory 2025–26: What Every Devotee Must Know

Sabarimala Pilgrimage Health Advisory 2025–26: What Every Devotee Must Know

The Mandala–Makaravilakku season attracts millions of Sabarimala devotees each year, making it one of India’s largest spiritual gatherings. To ensure a safe and healthy pilgrimage, the Kerala Health Department has issued an official health advisory outlining essential precautions. As a community-focused brand, HARIOE is committed to helping spread this important information so every pilgrim can complete the journey safely.

1. Water Safety: Preventing Amoebic Meningoencephalitis

Pilgrims bathing in natural water bodies—especially the Pampa river—are advised to be extremely cautious. Health officials have highlighted the risk of amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare brain infection that occurs when waterborne amoebas enter through the nose.

How to stay safe:

  • Avoid allowing water to enter the nose while bathing.

  • Prefer clean, treated, or controlled water sources whenever possible.

2. Physical Fitness and Safe Trekking Practices

The Sabarimala trek demands stamina and preparation.

Devotees are encouraged to:

  • Begin light exercises (walking, stretching) several days prior.

  • Climb slowly and take regular breaks.

  • Seek help immediately if experiencing chest pain, extreme fatigue, dizziness, or breathlessness.

Those above 45 years or with a history of cardiac or hypertension issues should undergo a medical check-up before the pilgrimage.

3. Medical Preparedness

Devotees undergoing treatment must:

  • Carry their medical records.

  • Bring sufficient stock of their regular medicines.

  • Never discontinue prescribed medication during the pilgrimage.

4. Hygiene and Food Safety Guidelines

To prevent infections and digestive issues:

  • Drink only boiled and cooled water.

  • Wash hands with soap before meals.

  • Eat only fresh, covered, and hygienically prepared food.

  • Avoid stale or exposed food items.

  • Use designated toilets and wash hands afterward.

5. Emergency Contacts & On-Ground Medical Support

Pilgrims can get emergency assistance through the dedicated control room:
📞 04735 203232

To support devotees throughout the journey, authorities have set up:

  • Emergency Medical Centres and Oxygen Parlours across the trekking route

  • Cardiac Emergency Services, including a cath lab at Pathanamthitta General Hospital

  • Heart-ready ambulances

  • Fully equipped labs and operation theatres at Nilakkal, Pampa, and Sannidhanam

These facilities operate continuously to handle medical emergencies like heart distress, dehydration, and breathlessness.
